This is a very challenging time. Parents know their children best and know what helps them. Suggested tips:
- Keeps kids connected to others — grandparents and peers, for example, even if it’s virtual
- Ensure kids have a diversity of activities
- Keep a regular routine
- Spend lots of time together as a family (e.g. family meals, board games)
- Make sure kids are getting outside (exercise and reducing screen time are both very good for mental health)
- Check in to see how they are doing and validate their feelings
- Be available to talk when they want to (but also give them space)
- If you are concerned about your child or youth’s mental health, consult your family doctor, access mental health care through 1Call1Click.ca, and the Youth Services Bureau’s 24/7 crisis line at 613-260-2360 or 1-877-377-7775 (toll free for Eastern Ontario)
